Abstract

Historical records from 1698 reported a large earthquake 7.3 MIC at the basal plain of Carihuairazo volcano (Ecuador). The earthquake destroyed the old Ambato city and triggered large mudflows which flowed down the Ambato River. The flows buried the earthquake’s survivors and what was left of the city. This manuscript uses historical records and field data to reproduce these mudflows by using numerical modelling to better understand this phenomenon and its potential future implications. Events of this nature have occurred in the recent history of Ecuador and are a latent threat to society.
