Abstract

Based on the seismic events detected at Canario (PPPV) station, located on the North side of Popocatepetl Volcano, five different types of volcanic events were determined using wave-form and spectral characteristics: volcano-tectonic events (VT), long period (LP), rock-fall events, explosions and tremors. From these types of events, the LP were subdivided into seven different families. The behavior of these families before and after periods of volcanic activity (June 30, 1997; December 24, 1997; January 1, November 24, and December 18, 1998; December 18, 2000 and January 22, 2001) at Popocatepetl, showed that the events of three families, clearly preceded the eruptive activity.
