Abstract

Initial results of a volcano-magnetic variation study in the Volcán de Colima are presented. This volcano is considered the most active volcano of Mexico in historic times. This study shows that the volcanic building presents four different mag- netic behaviors characterized by magnetic variations in the eastern slope, in the limit of protovolcano caldera, in the floor of the protovolcano (El Playón) and those cor- related with areas of weakness like faults and/or fractures. Volcano-magnetic varia- tions are identified as precursors of the 1998-1999 volcanic activity.
